Kim’s foreign minister Ri Yong Ho said President Donald Trump’s comments over the weekend were “clearly a declaration of war”.
During a very rare briefing to reporters at the UN Millenium Plaza hotel in New York, he said the international community should “remember that the US declared war on North Korea”.
It comes at a time when it is clear that tensions are at an all-time high between the hermit kingdom and US, and that an all-out war could be days away.
US President Trump tweeted on Friday: “Kim Jong Un of North Korea, who is obviously a madman who doesn’t mind starving or killing his people, will be tested like never before!”
The American leader was retaliating after Kim Jong-un threatened to test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean as part of its ongoing military programme.
President Trump last week warned that the US would “totally destroy” Kim’s secretive state during his first UN General Assembly speech.
