A Flanders man was arrested by Southampton Town Police this week and charged with raping two children last year.
Shawn D. Reid was arrested Thursday, January 19, by Town Police following a 10-week investigation and charged with two counts of first-degree rape, a felony, and arraigned Friday morning at the Southampton Town Justice Court in Hampton Bays.
Mr. Reid, whose age was not given, is currently being held at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside after failing to post bail, which was set at $250,000 cash or $500,000 bond. It was not immediately clear when he would return to court.
Police did not offer any details of the assault other than to say the victims were 6- and 7-year-old girls. It is unclear if Mr. Reid knew the two victims, when the rapes allegedly occurred and where. Town Police Lieutenant Susan Ralph refused to share any other information about the investigation, citing the age of the victims.
First-degree rape is the highest sexual assault charge, and is filed when police believe a person engages in sexual intercourse with another person by force, or if the victim is less than 11 years old, is unable to consent by reason of being physically helpless, or if the victim is less than 13 and the defendant is over 18.
Town Police Detectives made the arrest with the assistance of the department’s Community Response Unit and Suffolk County Child Protective Services.
